Paua is the Maori name given to a group of shells also known as Abalone. The innermost layer of the shell is composed of nacre or mother-of-pearl, which is highly iridescent, showing rainbow colours with dominant blues and greens - hence its common name 'the Opal of the Sea'. Revered by tribes throughout the world as a magical gift from the ocean, Paua/Abalone shells are fished and farmed on a well-managed sustainable basis.

It is believed that Paua Shell strengthens the structure of the body and the functions of the Heart Chakra. This vibrant shell has also been connected to family, particularly motherhood and harmony in relationships; the energies of Paua Shell are said to give protection and emotional balance.
