Tibetan singing bowls were used in Buddhist meditation and prayer ceremonies and today they are used all over the world for meditation, Chakra balancing, holistic healing, Reiki, and many forms of stress reduction. The bowls used in ancient times were made of multiple metals and hand-beaten to achieve the ability to produce an harmonic sound and range of overtones that brought about the right frequency and resonance with the human mind. Today, these bowls are often made by casting and usually produce only one tone.
The bowl is placed on a mat or cushion on a surface, or held in the flat of the hand and struck with a wooden stick (called a Puja Stick). The sides of the bowl vibrate and resonate to produce harmonic sounds that are said to induce a sense of deep relaxation and centre the left and right sides of the brain to a perfect balance. The overtones produced by these singing bowls are understood to affect the chakras directly, helping to balance them and bring about harmony of mind and body.
