Guided Imagery (also called guided meditation) is the process of using words and often music, to take the listener on an inner journey, for a particular purpose. Guided imagery, combined with soothing music, can bring about the state of mind and body most conducive to healing - deep relaxation, and positive focus. Guided imagery can also be used to release tension, anxiety, past hurts, and a variety of negative emotional states. When you need to get in touch with your inner being or Guardian Angel, an exercise in guided imagery can help you make the transition from your everyday thinking to heightened awareness. Take a few minutes to make this journey.
People with serious mental health problems should avoid using guided imagery except under the supervision of a therapist. If you are severely depressed, hear voices, are in deep mental anguish or fear, please get professional help. Also, don't use guided imagery while driving a car.
There are 12 guided imagery sessions - for different needs or current life situations, and there are two ways of experiencing guided imagery. Either have a friend read the guided imagery script for you as you mediate, or tape record the appropriate guided imagery passage and play this as you meditate.
Before you begin, find time to be alone. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position in a place that feels safe to you. Playing some quiet relaxing music often helps in guided imagery. Take three deep breaths. With each breath, release the tension from your body as you exhale. As you inhale, fill yourself with energy, light and inner calm. Then, close your eyes, and take one more relaxing breath before you play back your guided imagery tape or your friend reads the passage to you.
