Symbolism & Meaning
The Hamsa (or Chamsa) is an ancient talisman worn or carried to avert the evil eye. The amulet is a hand with five digits symbolising the Creator's protective hand. In Judaism the 5 digits represent the 5 chapters of the Torah and is known as the Hand of Miriam in reference to the sister of Moses and Aaron. In Islam the five digits represent the Five Pillars of Islam and is known as the Hand of Fatima, commemorating Fatima Zahra the daughter of the prophet Muhammad.
The Evil Eye symbol is one of the strongest images in the world. It is believed that one can be harmed by a look given to inflict suffering or some form of bad luck. Evil Eye items are worn or carried to ward off such evil and keep the wearer safe from harm.
